A couple of weeks ago, I watched this video about California’s recently passed Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage. The deadline for signing the attached letter to the Supreme Court, asking them to invalidate Proposition 8 was February 14, Valentine’s Day (the deadline has been extended to March 2). The video was all over feminist blogs such as Bitch Magazine, feministing.com and Feministe. Since Valentine’s Day is your typical heteronormative, heterosexist holiday (seriously, just look at this J.C. Penny ad), it’s nice to see people using media to try to do something that is beneficial for many people, instead of using it to advocate rampant consumerism on this horrendously consumerist holiday. Hallmark also got in on the love, which is cool.
